From people filling out my college questionnaire I found out a number of different things about the potential audience. Only 5% of people who filled in the questionnaire think about reading the current college magazine so there is a very small number of people out of the potential audience that would read my magazine to start with, but this would be changed if the magazine proves to be popular, as it would be advertised by word of mouth by current readers.
I also found out that the things that would attract people to read the magazine were mainly free stuff and interesting stories. To start off with, the only one I could provide is interesting stories as I would not have enough revenue to provide free stuff to accompany the magazine but as popularity of the magazine spreads free gifts with the magazine would become available. 25% of people I surveyed would like the magazine to have bright colours on the magazine which I think would be a good idea as it would draw people in to the front cover of the magazine which in turn could increase sales.
I found out that most people would like the magazine to be produced either monthly or termly as opposed to fortnightly or weekly. This means sales would be lower, but there would be more content in each magazine which could increase the % of people in the college that would buy the magazine. I think I would do the magazine monthly instead of termly as this would mean more frequent issues, but still issues would be far enough apart to have a good amount of content in them.
Out of all the people I surveyed, 35% of them said that they would like the magazine to be free, and 50% said that they would be willing to pay anything up to £1. I would have to charge anything between 50p and £1 for the magazine as this would give me enough money to invest in free stuff to go with the magazine.
Out of the list of possible content themes I gave the people I surveyed, the vast majority said that they would like the magazine to have music and film related topics in them. I think to sell the magazine well I would have to include these topics as it is what most people want, but as it is a college magazine I would have to include education related topics such as local job information, university information and college news.
Overall, 75% of all people surveyed said that they would like the magazine to be informal. I think it is best for the magazine to be informal as it would appeal more to young people and suit a college magazine more as the readers would mostly be between the ages of 16-20.
A lot of the people who answered my survey said that they would like it if the magazine had a web version of the magazine. I think this is a good idea, but to begin with, this would not be possible as there is no way we could charge for the web magazine, and we would have to make some money off selling the magazine first to get the money together to set up a website. This idea is one that may be used in the future but not until the magazine is well established.
The majority of people surveyed said that they would like the magazine to be 21-40 pages long, which I think is a good idea as we could fit in a lot of content in that amount of pages, but not too much so it gets boring.
Almost everyone who I surveyed said that they would not contribute to the magazine, which is a setback as I would have hoped that some people would have. This shouldn’t be too much of a problem though.
